The Catcher In the Rye by J.D.Salinger

Catcher in the Rye is a classic for a good reason - after each read, it gives something important back to you. Its like a warm blanket that you can (and probably should) cuddle up in and read all in one night. Holden (the main character) is so easy to relate to, like a good friend in high school that you don’t talk to anymore, or a family friend that you spent summers with in your teens. Being an adult can be phoney at times and its very fulfilling to move that from the back of your mind and let it live the front for a bit. Life isn’t always the adventure you want or plan for, but there is wisdom in making mistakes and ultimately, despite the ups and downs, you’re on the right track!

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

This book is in my top 3 books ever. I read it last summer and couldn't put it down (sorry family who I was staying with at the time)! This book is beautifully written, powerful, poignant, heartbreaking and funny all at the same time. It's a coming-of-age story of a boy growing up in the Appalachian Mountains during the 90's who has many odds stacked against him but as dark as this book can get there are shiny bright spots that will reach your heart. This book is a thick one, but every sentence is remarkable.

I’m a sucker for a thought-provoking page turner and I absolutely relish a dystopian fiction novel that keeps you enthralled from beginning to end. One of my favourites is from Margaret Atwood’s Madd Adam trilogy, Oryx and Crake which delves into the dark consequences of genetic engineering, environmental degradation, and corporate greed in a futuristic future. Atwood weaves a chilling narrative that questions the ethical boundaries of science, the fragility of human civilization, and the nature of love and loyalty. 

This novel makes a fantastic summer read because it’s thought-provoking yet accessible, blending speculative fiction with a thrilling plot. Its vivid imagery and sharp commentary invite deep reflection on current societal and environmental issues, making it not just entertaining but also intellectually enriching. If you enjoy stories that challenge the status quo and spark big conversations, Oryx and Crake is an excellent choice.

I think we can all relate to it being that time of year where your work and personal life is super busy and all you can think about is being able to kick your feet up and relax over the holiday season. Our tip

It’s important to choose a very high protection UVA/UVB Broad-spectrum protect sunscreen. SPF (sun protection factor) 50+ is best suited to Australian conditions. We recommend that if you plan to spend time in the sun to choose a water-resistant sunscreen. This format can help minimise the impact of water or sweat to your sunscreen layer. Always follow the directions of use for your selected sunscreen.

To complement sun protection products: slip, slop, slap, seek and slide. SunSmart recommends that you Slip on clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Slop on an SPF 50 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen. Slap on a broad-brimmed hat that shades the face, ears, and neck. Seek shade, and Slide on sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard for UV protection.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreens are only one component of sun protection. Prolonged high-risk sun exposure should be avoided. Frequent use and re-application in accordance with directions is required for effective sun protection.

Discovering a signature scent is like finding a part of yourself – a fragrance that feels uniquely you. Whether it’s fresh, floral or something spicy, a scent that just fits can make you feel more confident, connected and comfortable in your own skin.  

Here are some simple tips to guide you on your journey: 

1. Identify Your Scent Family

Fragrances generally fall into different categories known as scent families. Spicy oriental, warm and woody, sparkling fresh or romantically floral - with so many beautiful fragrances out in the universe, identifying the scent family you gravitate to will quickly put you on the path to finding that kindred scent that sings to your spirit. Through a little exploration, you will naturally find that you lean towards particular fragrance notes and profiles. Some common scent families include: 

• Floral: Soft, romantic, and feminine, perfect for those who love a fresh, garden-inspired scent. 

• Woody: Earthy and warm, for people who prefer deeper, more grounded fragrances. 

• Oriental: Rich and spicy, for lovers of luxury and exotic tastes. 

• Fresh: Clean and crisp, ideal if you want something refreshing, light and easygoing. 

 Don’t overthink it. When it comes to scent, often your first instinct is the right one. 

2. Get To Know Your Notes

A fragrance is built on top, middle & base notes – but what does this mean? Notes are the synthetic or natural oil profiles found within a perfume. Think of these being in order from lightest to heaviest in depth and intensity.  

Top notes are the part of the perfume profile that you smell first, these tend to be lighter fruits, florals, herbs and spices that always make the first impression. As the fragrance starts to dry down you are then hit with the middle notes, these are also known as the heart of the fragrance.  

The middle notes help add depth to the fragrance and the notes found here tend to be the theme of the fragrance. 

The strongest and least volatile notes found in a perfume are the base notes. The most common notes found in the base of a fragrance are vanilla and musk – like our Stellar eau de parfum, Sandalwood and Vetiver – found in our Solar eau de parfum, and Amber and Cedarwood – found in our Lunar eau de parfum. 

3. Select Your Strength

Allowing you to dial into your preferred potency and projection, fragrances are also typically available in a range of intensities, most commonly a medium intensity ‘eau de toilette’ and fuller bodied and long lasting ‘eau de parfum’. It’s all in the concentrations. Eau de toilettes usually contain between 5-9% of perfume oil, making them a wonderful option for fans of lighter fragrance strength, while eau de parfums contain 8-14% of perfume oil, for greater projection and longer, more resilient wear.  Our new collection Southern Skies are potent eau de parfums that are long lasting and settle beautifully on the skin.

4. Test and Trial

We’ve all been in a situation where a fragrance sounds like something you’d love, or smells amazing on someone else but smells... different... on you. Why? Skin chemistry – and it’s unique to each of us. 

Getting a bit scientific here for a sec, a fragrance can react and wear differently on skin for these reasons: 

1. your skin type
2. your skin’s pH
3. your diet

So, it’s important to try a perfume or an aftershave on your skin if you can, to accurately gauge how the fragrance is going to settle and wear on your skin. Pay attention to how a scent unfolds over time, beyond the initial impression and through all of its phases.  

As you can see, when it comes to connecting to a fragrance, scent family, notes, concentration, longevity and physical reaction to your very own skin all play a vital role. It might sound like a lot, but truly – the process is very instinctive and should be an enjoyable and ultimately rewarding journey.
