We interviewed Natio skincare educator, Christina Schroder about the rising interest in skincare from tweens, and how parents and carers can best guide a healthy approach to building a skincare routine for their tween or teen.
As long as I can remember I have loved make up, skincare and fragrance. When I was almost 15 I got my first job and one of the first things I purchased my first eyeshadow – a beautiful lilac shade filled with silver glitter; it was so precious to me that I never used it and still have it to this day. Seeing my mum do her morning routine, taking care to apply her skincare and then makeup and never leaving the house without a spray - or 5 - of her favourite perfume, the ritual of beauty was a symbol of femininity, status and selfcare.
At 12 I started to develop cystic acne and my mum purchased products from a very reputable and expensive brand that left my skin dehydrated, irritated and sensitive. I followed the recommendations of the skincare consultant, however I now know these products shouldn’t have made it into my hands as they were active and aggressive in nature. Fast forward to 18 and I was still searching for answers, I was doing so much to try improve my skin and in hindsight, I was doing too much.
After school I became a Beauty Therapist and it was only then I really learnt how to work with my skin and not against it. There is a difference between sensitive & sensitised skin and the differences between skin types and skin conditions. Since the explosion of social media (queue TikTok trends and kid influencers) I have become very aware that I need to educate my kids about their bodies, and skin and body care is definitely part of that. Yes they’re very young, but I’m getting in early and sharing messages about embracing our differences, body positivity and just because something is a trend doesn’t mean it’s right for you, are key messages in our household.
What is the ideal skin routine for a young tween?
This really depends on your child and their skin type or skin concern, but most tweens don’t need an extensive routine. If it’s the occasional hormonal breakout, then a spot treatment would be fine, like the Clear Quick Fix Spot Treatment - however you need to make sure it’s only going on the pimple and not outside of that area, as it could dry out the skin quite a lot, leaving it flaky or irritated.
If you feel like it’s the right time for your tween to start with a routine then I would be going for simple skincare with gentle ingredients. The Natio Calm range is a great place to start. It has a cleanser and day lotion, and if you really wanted to then you could add the night cream and eye cream – not because they have wrinkles, but purely based on the ingredients in eye creams being targeted for the delicate skin around the eyes. I would absolutely be adding the Kids Everyday Sensitive Sunscreen SPF 50+ to my child’s routine as this will be the best way to protect their delicate skin – this can be used on face and body, however SPF products shouldn’t be used at night and should be removed with a gentle cleanser.
If your teen has very oily or problematic skin (on a large area of skin on their face, more than just the occasional pimple) then they could try the Clear Oil Control Foaming Cleanser and Clear Shine Control Face Moisturiser. Do note though, the key to managing oil production is to make sure the skin is clean and balanced, not dehydrated, dry or tight. This tightness will impair the skin barrier and the skin will then overcompensate and produce more oil.
What ingredients should tweens avoid?
Definitely stay away from most actives such as Retinol/ Vitamin A, Niacinamide, Vitamin C, BHAs, AHAs including Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid, as well as Azelaic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide, just to name a few. Salicylic Acid does feature in the the Quick Fix Spot Treatment hence why we advise to use sparingly and only directly onto the spot.
What are the potential ramifications of misusing skincare as a tween?
Stripping the skin with aggressive products will lead to an impaired skin barrier, this makes the skin red, irritated and sensitised. It will also strip vital oils from the skin and the removal of all oils will dehydrate skin, making your tween’s skin produce more oil to make itself feel comfortable and become even more oily – it’s a vicious cycle. It’s also important to note that if you choose to use an exfoliant, something very gentle like the Gentle Facial Scrub would be ideal if it’s gently massaged onto a damp skin once a week or fortnight– try to remove this with tepid water, rather than hot or cold, as this can also stress the skin.
At what age should you start adding treatments and active ingredients to a skincare routine?
A gentle scrub can be used every so often if and when needed from early teen years. I would leave actives and most other treatments until at least early to mid-twenties.
What is an appropriate gift to give a tween beauty devotee?
Natio has some beautiful kids packs containing body and hair care for toddlers through to tweens. Another great choice could be a basic routine (cleanser, moisturiser and spot treatment) as well as a kids SPF 50+ and a lip gloss or nail polish nail polish for some fun.

Slugging, skin-cycling, micro needling, microplaning, flooding, oscilating brushing, icing, skincare snacking… You may have heard of some of these, but by the time you read this, they’re likely already a thing of the past.
Skincare trends and fads have increased in turnover rapidly in recent years, with bite-sized social media content churning through new buzzwords faster than you can say “Niacinamide!” (Which is not a trend, by the way).
While it can be tempting to jump on the latest niche ingredient or serotonin-boosting bright packaging, it’s best to heed caution when constantly switching up your skincare routine in line with new trends.
Skin confusion
Rapidly cycling through various skincare products can disrupt the skin's natural balance, causing irritation and potential ongoing skincare problems. Constantly changing up your products, ingredients and actives can confuse skin, and in many cases, can make the situation worse. Providing your skin with a constant, reliable routine will help to regulate moisture balance and sebum production.
It’s also worth noting that most skincare products don’t provide immediate and noticeable results. Typically, skin does take time to adjust to a new routine or product, and we should allow at least a few weeks to see any significant results. As with any skincare or cosmetic product, if you are experiencing irritation or signs of an allergic reaction, always discontinue use immediately and consider seeing a doctor if symptoms persist.
Where do I begin?
The skincare and beauty category is rapidly expanding, in part as a response to the constant trend cycle, so building a skincare routine from scratch may seem like a daunting challenge. Starting with an understanding of your skincare needs and addressing these first and foremost will provide a great base for your routine.
Key considerations:
What is my skin type?
What are my key skincare “problems”? (Even though we prefer the phrase “opportunities!”)
What do I want to achieve with my routine?
How many steps am I realistically going to use within a daily routine?
At Natio we have created a Skincare Finder to cut through the noise. To help disseminate what skincare products are best for your needs, this simple quiz provides a straightforward daytime and nighttime routine to address concerns and help achieve your skincare goals.
The sustainability factor
The constant demand for new products contributes to a culture of overconsumption and waste, as discarded products contribute to environmental pollution. Sustainable skincare, on the other hand, emphasises a focus on long-term skin health. A reliable skincare routine considers the well-being of both yourself and the planet. Take this into consideration before pressing “shop now” on the next microtrend to grace your feed.
Consider how this trending product will benefit your existing routine, if at all. Also take the time to go through your existing product ingredients, perhaps there are some key ingredients you are already using that offer the same benefits as this trending product. Also consider your needs. If this product claims to solve a skincare problem you don’t have – do you really need it?
I'm ready to commit!
Take our Skincare Finder quiz and receive 20% off your next order on our website to kick start your routine.

Sydney, Australia. A stunning city with a seamless blend of natural beauty and adventure. It’s also where I grew up and lived most of my life until moving down to Melbourne. I love my home city and want to help you uncover the best of it, so here is a list of all my favorite things to do.
Have a dip in the ocean pools
Sydney’s ocean pools are cherished havens for locals. Start your day with a refreshing swim at Bronte Baths or savor a relaxing dip at Wylie’s Baths. The rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the pools edges creates a harmonious ambiance that encapsulates the essence of our coastal lifestyle.
Wander through the Art Gallery of NSW
You will find the Art Gallery of NSW in most Sydney travel guides, yet it is also a much-loved place for locals seeking solace and inspiration. Particularly the modern wing, which has recently opened and boasts rooftop art terraces and courtyards. The new wing is beautifully built into Wolloomooloo’s natural landscape, following the slope of the hill its built into.
Wendy Whitleley’s Secret Garden
A hidden gem in Lavender Bay. With lush greenery, including a massive Australian fig tree (you’ll find these trees all over Sydney!), artistic sculptures and a gorgeous view of the blue harbour, it’s a special oasis - perfect for a leisurely scenic walk.
Stroll through Potts Point Markets
Held every Sunday, Potts Point markets has delicious food and a diverse array of vintage and handcrafted treasures. My personal favorite are the fresh juices and Portuguese tarts! Once you’ve enjoyed all the stores, take a stroll down the hill to Rushcutters Bay.
Snorkel at Gordons Bay
A secluded gem between Clovelly and Coogee, Gordons Bay is a peaceful escape from the tourist crowds around Bondi. Bring your goggles and witness the captivating marine life beneath its calm crystal clear waters. Over the summers, I’ve seen stingrays, wobbegongs, blue gropers, starfish, nudibranch and many tropical fish!
Royal Botanical Gardens
Another I’m sure you’ve seen in all the Sydney guides, but it’s always been my natural refuge right in the heart of the city so I couldn’t pass on adding it to my list. Bring a picnic and bask in the views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House while surrounded by native Australian plants. If you stay until dusk, don’t forget to look up and watch all the bats flying above!
Alibi Bar and Dining
Ask any local of the best place to eat in Woolloomooloo and they’ll be quick to tell you - Alibi Bar and Dining at the Ovolo Hotel. In fact, when writing this post, I texted my sister asking her favourite place to eat in Woolloomooloo and she even suggested it too! Known as Sydney’s conservatory of green, it exudes a sense of natural, both in the fit out and plant based food.
That’s why we’re so excited that Natio has partnered with Ovolo Hotels to offer you the chance to win an unforgettable three-night getaway for two at Ovolo Woolloomooloo, and over AU$500 worth of Natio products!

The best blush can elevate your makeup look, help your skin look more youthful and add a glow to your complexion that will enhance your natural beauty. Here we offer 3 key steps to get the best out of your blush beyond a simple swirl on your cheeks.
Pick a shade that works for your skin tone
You need to choose the right shade to flatter your complexion. The key is to choose a colour pigment that is closest to your natural flush. The best way to decipher this is to simply pinch your cheeks.
Pale and fair skin should opt for light pinks with lilac undertones, like our Rouge Glow Blusher - a flattering shimmer to enhance your natural beauty.
If you have medium to light skin, choose a peachy pink shade to give your skin a pretty glow. Olive or golden tones look great with a brighter or punchier pink . While those with Darker tones can opt for brighter, warmer under-toned apricots which will deliver beautifully radiant results.
Pick the right application method
You want to achieve a beautiful radiant look with the right tool. A tightly bound brush applies too much product to achieve a natural look, however a soft and loose, specific blush brush will pick up less product and still offer colour that is buildable. Swirl your brush in product and tap off any excess before applying to your face.
Choose the best formula for your skin type
The right formula will change the wear and effect of your beautiful look. If you have normal or combination skin or maturing skin, creamy formulas are great and offer great staying power.
If you have dry skin, stick to a powder formula. Powder blush glides over pores and provides a blurring effect. Which in turn enhances your natural skin and features to provide you with a beautiful finish to your makeup look.
Overall, we all agree that the best makeup look is one that makes you feel like your beautiful, natural self – love being you.

You asked, we listened! Our award-winning Glide On Eyeshadow Sticks have made their much awaited return. Perfect for on-the-go, these handbag essentials can take your makeup look from day to night with one quick swipe. The six shades are all available in a creamy smudge-free formula, perfect for all skin tones and ages. If you’re unfamiliar with eyeshadow sticks and want to master this product, today is your lucky day! We have compiled some tips and tricks to perfect and prime your peepers!
Blended base
These sticks set fast. So if you’re looking for a blended shade across your lids, the best application is one eye at a time. Simply apply the eyeshadow stick directly onto your lid from the tip applicator and gently buff and blend using a warm fingertip to spread. If you would prefer to use an eyeshadow brush, ensure you’re using a very dense, short bristled brush like the short end of our Apply & Blend Eyeshadow Brush.
Defined eye
Double duty! These sticks double as both an eyeshadow and an eyeliner. For a super sharp cat’s eye, gently hold a straight object like a pencil or a ruler the corner of your eye along the angle of your preferred wing. Using this guide, simply glide the eyeshadow stick across your lashline and tadaa! You have a fierce, metallic defined makeup look. Simple, yet effective.
No fall out
Unlike some powder-based eyeshadows, these eyeshadow sticks don’t fall out. “What is fall out?” you ask – Fall out is when you apply a powder pigment to your eyelids and little dustings of the shade fall onto your cheeks. No fall out = effortless, quick makeup without hassles!
Lush lashes
No eye makeup look is complete without lashings of mascara. Want to use more of our award-winning cosmetics products? Try our Infinite Tubing Mascara for giddying length without clumping, smudging or flaking.
We love to see how our valued customers use our products to let their creativity shine! If you create a look, share the love and tag us at @natiobeauty – we love watching you cherish your uniqueness.

While there's a lot to love about winter – think crackling open fires and thick, cosy coats, hot and hearty meals and crisp, cool air – the chilly season can take a visible toll on the complexion. Cool temps, around-the-clock heating and low humidity are real beauty thieves, with a knack for sucking the colour and lustre out of our faces. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Meet your best winter beauty switches here.
Extra hydrating skincare
The key to beating dull dryness? Proper skin hydration is essential during the colder months. Swapping to extra-nourishing skincare formulations, particularly cleanser, moisturiser or add a facial oil in your regimen. This will help your complexion stay soft, supple and smooth.
Switch on luminosity
Seek out makeup products that bring a little extra warmth and life into the complexion – a natural, gentle glowy radiance that looks lit from within. A luminous primer – instead of a traditional matte one – will help give washed out skin a naturally glowing effect. For example, Natio Bronze Glow Perfecting Primer imparts a sun kissed glow and creates a lasting base for the rest of your makeup.
Warm up with colour
When it comes to pasty skin, a bronzer, blush and highlighter are your instant-fix besties. Bronzer adds welcome warmth to skin, while a swirl of bright blush on the cheeks adds vibrance and freshness. A lick of highlighter on the high points of the face adds luminous dimension. Together, they bring perfect, pretty balance to a dreary, winter-weary face.
Create some smoke
Some soft and gentle definition to the eyes will draw attention to the area, and bring warmth to your look. A mix of flattering, nature-inspired shades and both luminous and matte textures will bring life and dimension to the eyes for a subtle smokey effect. The Natio Celebrate Eyeshadow Palette offers a diverse palette of natural eyeshadow tones and textures, and works back well with your favourite eyeliner and mascara.
Kiss lips with conditioning colour
Finally, a kiss of gently defining colour to the lips brightens the face with welcome warmth and life. Lip colours with nourishing naturals will help soothe and soften lips, though chapped lips will benefit most from a gloss formula like Natio Sheer Beauty Lip Gloss or Antioxidant Lip Shine.
And there you have it! Some tips and tricks to keep you golden and glowing throughout our coolest season.
